Who Should Pay?

Carmel Pine Cone, March 13, 2009

Dear Editor,

How about putting some accountability
into the vote for Carmel Valley incorporation?
Let’s assume for a minute that we
could develop a means whereby some organization
could capture the names and yea or
nay votes of all the people who go to the
polls to vote for or against incorporation. If
incorporation is approved, that organization
will keep those names and their votes secret
unless the Town of Carmel Valley runs into
financial difficulties within the next 15
years. At that time, the organization would
reveal who voted for incorporation. If the
town requires increased revenue, those people
who voted for incorporation would be the
ones accountable to come up with the money
to make up the shortfall. Those who voted
against incorporation would not be charged
any money. Seems to me that the people
who vote to make this thing happen should
be held accountable in case the three independent
fiscal experts turn out to be wrong.
I know I sure will be unhappy if incorporation
is approved and five years from now my
taxes have to go up because the Town of
Carmel Valley is unable to cover its expenses.
