Opponents of incorporation get short shrift

Monterey Herald, July 13, 2009

I note the bevy of letters favoring incorporation of Carmel Valley that have appeared lately in your paper. I am not sure if the bevy comes from this editorial page's obvious support for the proposition or from a well organized attack by the proponents. I also note that much of the support seems to be coming from people who do not live here.

Many of us who do not support incorporation are not funded, are too busy to write letters, or worn out from fighting the incessant push by those who would rule our lives. More importantly, many of the opponents have been disenfranchised even though they have an abiding interest in the issue. They are disenfranchised because they work or own businesses in Carmel Valley but vote elsewhere or they own homes in Carmel Valley but claim primary residence elsewhere.

I would much rather hear from them than someone with no vested interest in the outcome. But then again, residents of Pacific Grove may be able to shed some light on the causes of a failed city.

Editor's note: The Herald has editorialized in favor of putting the incorporation issue to a vote but has not yet taken a position on incorporation itself.
