Quail Lodge Hotel's Closure Bad News for C.V.

Monterey Herald -- Sept. 16, 2009

The closure of Quail Lodge has made me nervous for the incorporation of Carmel Valley. The new town will lose hotel tax revenue that had been projected. The new town's budget would rely heavily on this tax; therefore, the new town is already dipping into its contingency fund and it hasn't even even incorporated yet. That makes me extremely nervous.

Along with that, LAFCO projects a negative deficit trend to the proposed town budget at "year six." LAFCO estimates the town will make a surplus in the first five years, which the LAFCO-planned future annual deficits will begin to eat away. Since the surplus is already down from the Quail closure and the Tehama backout, "year six" could come quicker than planned.

By the time my generation becomes leaders of the town, it potentially will be bankrupt. This is too big of a risk to accept.

I urge the people of Carmel Valley to vote no on G, and vote Odello for council. No city. No risk!

Jake Odello
