Incorporation supporters misstate fire facts

Monterey Herald -- Oct. 1, 2009

Recent letters have discussed no changes to fire service in the proposed incorporation of Carmel Valley. As a member of the Carmel Valley Fire Protection District for 33 years and a battalion chief, here are the facts.

The city proponents' service plan grossly inflates the number of stations, engines, paid staff, volunteers and staffing levels in our district. Also, it fails to mention the serious financial trouble our district is experiencing.

Most importantly, our area is presently a state responsibility area, meaning the state is financially responsible for wildland fire protection and suppression, at no cost to the local taxpayer or county. Upon incorporation, we will automatically become a local responsibility area. The new city (and its taxpayers) will be financially responsible for wildland fire protection.

Remember the Basin Complex Fire last summer? Coming close to Carmel Valley, it threatened our community and homes, and cost tens of millions to fight. If a fire occurs in the valley, the new city could never afford the millions to fight it.

I prefer to rely on the fat wallet of the state of California than the coin purse of the new city of Carmel Valley. Vote NO on G.
