Ignore spin, vote no on C.V. incorporation

Monterey Herald -- Oct. 2, 2009

I have to congratulate proponents of the incorporation of Carmel Valley: they have become "spin meisters." The signs around town encourage voting for Proposition G to keep the valley rural, yet do not tie this to incorporation. This is deceiving and tries to usurp this visceral issue. The opponents of creating a city are just as committed to controlling growth.

And the spin continues, ignoring the facts, which are simply that growth in the valley has been minuscule over the past 20 years, cities are going broke everywhere, the revenue assumptions of the analysis have been shredded, the costs of a city major and forever, and the avowed supporters are advocates of more government. And the head feint that anti-incorporation efforts are funded by developers is simply a lie.

I would encourage the voters to duck the spin and look at the facts. There is simply no reason to incorporate Carmel Valley and a lot of reasons not to do so. Vote no on Proposition G and do not let government get bigger. It is the right thing to do.
