Carmel Valley News -- December 2009

Dear Editor:

First, I want to thank the 53% of Carmel Valley voters who refused to make a city out of our pastoral paradise. Despite the hyperbole on all sides, you made the common-sense decision, in my opinion.

Second, I want to thank proponents of Prop-G for waking many of us up to our duty to be more vigilant on the issue of inappropriate development in the Valley, and congratulate you on achieving your goal: CV residents got the chance to vote on incorporation after years of your work, and apparently an unprecedented 75%-plus of us did so according to the final tally. I'll drive carpool to the next Rancho Canada/September Ranch meeting in Salinas!

Third, my thanks to all the County employees who helped me understand the financial issues in recent weeks; you were the epitome of disinterested professionalism, and I look forward to working with you, and the Board of Supervisors, going forward.

Finally, I want to say to the citizens of the rest of unincorporated Monterey County: "We're still with you in these tough economic times!" We are all so lucky to live in what is--in my opinion--the most beautiful place in the world. Out of the blue, thanks to the recession, our kids may even be able to afford to live here someday; let's continue to take good care of it for them.
