Environmental Impact

Monterey Herald, Feb. 13, 2005

Dear Editor:

It's ironic that backtivists (activists wanting to go back in time to just after they arrived and built their own mini-mansions here) are pushing incorporation on Carmel Valley for environmental reasons, but whine when required to do an environmental impact report. Many are also members of local groups that use EIRs as weapons to disrupt and delay others but grovel before LAFCO, pontificating on their own "specialness" and complaining about having to do an EIR like everyone else; EIRs are painful, expensive and take time, "boo-hoo." Their only argument seems to be, "We have good intentions so we shouldn't have to, but others have evil intentions so they should."

The smartest LAFCO members know the truth of the environmental impact of cities, especially those conceived from sloppy planning (two half-time public works employees for the next 10 years -- really? Really.) Those voting for the EIR recognized backtivist dreams devoid of any incorporationist intent at governance guided by common sense.

I'm dedicating a special ceremonial dance to the paperwork gods to create a document demanding incorporationists produce a full EIR. That is something LandWatch, Sierra Club and Carmel Valley Forum should have asked for anyway.
