Proponents of a City in Carmel Valley fail to understand that city governments spend lots of money. Compare the budgets below of three coastal cities. Notice that their budgets are very high compared to the budget proposal for a possible Carmel Valley City. Who’s fooling whom?

Half Moon Bay (6 sq. miles): With a population of 12,149 residents, this city incorporated in 1959. Expenditures of all funds for the 2004/2005 fiscal season came to $26,880 million.

Pacific Grove (2.86 sq. miles): Incorporated in 1889, this local city has a population of 15,577 residents. Expenditures of all funds for 2004/2005 fiscal seasons came to $26 million.

Dana Point (6.5 sq. miles): A coastal city in Orange County, this city has population of 36,550. It incorporated in 1989. Expenditures of all funds for the 2004/2005 fiscal season came to $31,179 million. Many municipal services are contracted out. The year before, all expenditures of all funds came to $57,398 million.

Carmel Valley City (44 sq. miles): with a population slight under 12,000 residents was the first valley to have its own master plan. The proposed budget for Carmel Valley is $5.7 million for the 3 year of operation and $5.6 million for the 10th year of operation.
