A Prison in P.B.?

Carmel Pine Cone, Dec. 5, 2008

Dear Editor,

The idea of locating a prison in Carmel Valley is preposterous. Both sides in the Carmel Valley incorporation debate know that. Nonetheless, the idea of foisting an incarceration facility upon unsuspecting residents in some unincorporated part of Monterey County does have some merit. In fact, there already exists an area within unincorporated Monterey County that is ideally situated for a high-security state prison — Pebble Beach.

Pebble Beach, largely surrounded by water and with multiple guard gates already in place, would be a prison paradise. In fact, many tourists to our area, after having visited Alcatraz the previous day, often remark about how Pebble Beach reminds them of The Rock ... only with trees, golf courses, equestrian trails, countless luxury European automobiles and multimillion-dollar homes.

Security experts say that a prison in Pebble Beach would be virtually escape-proof as nobody can find their way out of that place, especially at night. Also, in this era of increasing fiscal belt-tightening, a room-swapping arrangement between the California Department of Corrections and the Pebble Beach Company to handle any ebbs and flows in their respective accommodation capacities could be a huge money-saver.

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors must act quickly upon this prison site opportunity, before the residents of Pebble Beach get any silly notions about incorporating!
